Usually speakers use 8 or 16. The idea of an L-pad is that, with the correct load attached, the amplifier "sees" the correct load regardless of the setting of the pad. So, for an 8 ohm speaker, with an 8 ohm L-pad, the impedance looking in would be 8 ohms regardless of setting.
